I have been in Hong Kong for around 6 years now, and have visited America and other Asian countries, and still feels that Hong Kong is one of the perfect places to work and live in. The credit goes to Hong Kong people and primarily my office buddies for treating me nicely, so I decided to stay this long. I personally have rarely seen people leaving Hong Kong on their own for superior cities. Today I decided to put my perspective on this blog, and hope its helpful for people planning their move to Hong Kong for job or business.
Benefits of working or living in HK:
1. Low taxes: maximum salaries tax in HK is 17%. (Details here http://www.gov.hk/en/residents/taxes/taxfiling/taxrates/salariesrates.htm)
2. Safe city: A safe place for family and a girl/women can travel alone even late nights using public transport.
3. Convenient Public Transport: MTRs, late night buses, and any time taxi services are available over a call. Private car is not required for daily usage, but could be for weekend family trips.
4. Hiking options: Multiple options to hike in HK, only if you like. (http://discovery.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en/hong-kong/walk/best-walks/)
5. Nearby countries to explore: HK is a small country, but got easy access to explore nearby countries like Japan, China(sharing border), Macau(1 hour), Taiwan(2 hours), Thailand, Indonesia and more.
6. Global City: Not as global as New York, but finest in comparison to other Asian cities. (http://www.discoverhongkong.com)
7. Jobs and Jobs: Its a finance hub for Asia, and so best place in Asia for finance related jobs. Also good chunk of IT Jobs.
8. Helper: If you have lived in USA or Europe, then you are used to do most of your house work on own. But that's not required in Hong Kong, as its easy to find part time or full time helper in affordable cost.
9. Nice people. :) "People make a country".
Some of not so attractive things:
1. Language restrictions: Cantonese is local language, but English is spoken by most of the residents. With little struggle sometimes, you can talk to anyone in the city.
2. Small houses: Small houses compared to other countries like India, China, America. An average house is 600 sq.ft., and a good one can go to 800 sq. ft. Few bigger options available with higher rents.
3. High rents: Houses are small but rents are high. We moved to a place 1 hour from city, but still got MTR and bus connectivity.
4. Mostly Asian cuisine options: City got more Asian restaurants with limited other options. Hard to find authentic Spanish, Mexican or other European food.
I am sure that I haven't explored Hong Kong completely, so many more good things to add here. But I will keep it short for now, and feel free to add comments for sharing any missing point.
